Flinders Crescent Wetland Upgrade Complete

The expansion of the stormwater treatment wetland in Flinders Crescent, Wyndham Vale has been completed.

The project is the first wetland to be upgraded as part of Wyndham City’s $3 million Healthier Waterways program, which will result in a total of nine stormwater treatment wetlands being upgraded by 2022.

Environment and Sustainability portfolio holder Cr Heather Marcus said the wetland had been significantly extended in size, with new flora planted.

“With Wyndham’s population growing, there is a need for bigger wetlands to treat our dirty stormwater, which picks up contaminants from our houses, roads and other urban features,” Cr Marcus said.

“The new plants will soak up excess nutrients, effectively cleaning and filtering the stormwater that drains out from this wetland.”

“Once the stormwater has been treated, it will flow on to our natural waterways, including the Werribee River and Skeleton Creek, which in turn flow to Port Phillip Bay.”

“So, Wyndham City’s Healthier Waterways program will benefit communities across Victoria.”

“In addition, the expanded wetlands will create a home for wildlife, including frogs, insects and birds, and further beautify local neighbourhoods.”

“Wyndham City is committed to doing all we can to protect our natural environment, and the Healthier Waterways program will do just that.”
